Spring garden fever

April 2, 2015 by Mia Staysko

I spent the day with my good friend Karen yesterday. It was my intention to take her for lunch but as usual we got a bit side-tracked and ended up in a string of stores looking for the kind of random things that I am usually looking for.

We started at a greenhouse. I was looking to find a particular kohlrabi seed called ‘Superschmeltz’. Steve and I had seen some of these enormous beasts at a farmer’s market in Penticton, BC last year and he’s been bugging me ever since to find some seeds so we can try growing them this year. The fellow who was selling his veggies told me they came from West Coast Seeds so I knew that I could find them online. However, I wanted to see if I could find them locally first – in an attempt to save me the money of shipping the seeds. No such luck, but I did get two varieties of bean seeds, as well as some acorn squash and carrot seeds. The squash will need to be started right away so I’ll need to get going on that. I’m getting a bit itchy to get into the garden so that will give me a reason to get my hands dirty.

Spagetti squash

Last year I put in 2 hills of spaghetti squash. They were awesome but I ended up with over 40 of them! This year I figure I’ll spread the love and plant more than one kind for some variety.

Next up – patio furniture.

Pergola

We built a cedar pergola in our side yard last year to fill a space that was sitting empty. It was a big project and it looks great. Now it needs to have a reason for being so I’m on the hunt for some furniture to make it useful.

Since it sits on the east side of the house it is perfect for enjoying a coffee in the morning, or as a cooler spot on a hot day to eat dinner. Our west facing deck can be smokin’ hot in the late afternoon.

I think I’ve decided on a round patio table with 4 chairs. That will be comfortable enough for sitting and if we end up with company I can always pull up an extra chair or two since the table is round.

Now I’m getting excited about spring!
